The Round Rock ISD Board of Trustees approved a 1 percent Districtwide pay increase for the 2021-2022 school year at its regular April meeting.
The salary increase will cost the District $4.6 million and is included in the 2021-2022 budget, slated to be presented for adoption in June.
Acting Superintendent of Schools Dr. Daniel Presley, as well as Trustees, acknowledged that a 1 percent increase was far less than what educators deserve, but was recommended given budget constraints related to the COVID-19 pandemic and no anticipated increase in funding from the Texas Legislature for the biennium.
“Our staff continues to be an incredible asset to Round Rock ISD and a key factor as to why we were able to provide our community with innovative approaches to learning this past year,” Presley said. “I know Trustees agree with me that we wish this increase could be more.”
In January 2021, the Board of Trustees approved a one-time, lump-sum payment of $500 for each Round Rock ISD staff member as an effort to retain, recognize and support staff during this school year with the unprecedented challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Teachers and librarians will see a $550 general pay increase and an adjustment to steps in years seven to nine and 22 to 30 to alleviate compression between years of service. Starting salary for teachers will also increase to $50,250.
Eligible pay grades will receive an increase equal to 1 percent of the pay range midpoint.
The District will also implement recommendations from the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) Pay System Review for salary adjustments for Instructional Support, Administrative Support, Operations Support, Technology, Instructional Exempt, and Business Exempt staff to improve market competitiveness and internal equity.
During the compensation plan presentation, staff discussed the addition of the police pay structure to the compensation plan. The pay structure had previously not been included as the hiring of police department staff began after the approval of the 2020 – 2021 compensation plan. The 2021 – 2022 compensation plan is available on the Board Docs website.
