Ani Kumar, a sixth-grade student from Walsh Middle School, made his school proud by taking the gold medal in the U1400 category at the 2023 National Middle School (K-8) Chess Championship tournament.
In addition to the championship title, Ani, and classmate Krrish Kaul, combined forces to win the team trophy for Walsh in their respective category. Walsh was ranked tenth in the nation in the tournament.
The duo competed in the individual and team categories of the competition which took place at Kalahari Resorts in Round Rock. The tournament was highly competitive, with some of the best young chess players from across the country vying for the top spots.
