J.R. Hughes has been named the new principal of Cedar Valley Middle School.

Hughes has served as the assistant principal of Paetow High School in Katy ISD since 2020. During that time, he actively supported the campus during COVID-19 and partnered with counselors to provide services to students experiencing social-emotional challenges and mental health concerns. He also continually worked to further professional development by providing staff and teacher coaching to enhance classroom instruction. Before Katy ISD, he held assistant principal positions in Garland and Dallas ISDs. He has 11 years of experience in education, five of those years as a classroom teacher at the high school level.

“Education has always been my passion, and it has been my dream to one day become a principal,” Hughes said. “I am thankful and fortunate that day has come, and I am thrilled to join the Cedar Valley Middle School community. I am extremely excited to partner with students, staff, and the community in doing all that we can do together to foster a culture and climate that remains focused on the academic and social-emotional needs of our students.”

Hughes’ first day as principal will be Oct. 1. Until then, Darrell Overton will serve the campus as Interim Principal.

Hughes is currently in the Educational Leadership Doctoral Program at Southern Methodist University, where he received a Master’s in Educational Leadership. He has a Bachelor’s in Interdisciplinary Studies from the University of Texas at Dallas.
