Round Rock ISD is preparing to welcome back nearly 50,000 students for the 2021-2022 school year, with the vast majority attending school in-person on our campuses. The health and safety of our students, staff and community is our top priority. We are working diligently to employ various measures to keep our campuses as safe as possible as both Travis and Williamson counties are currently at the highest risk level for COVID-19.
Our local health authorities from Travis and Williamson counties, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, recommend that all students, staff, and visitors wear masks at school to mitigate current community spread of COVID-19, particularly considering the disease’s heightened transmission and infection rate primarily caused by the more transmissible “Delta” variant. Also, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends everyone older than the age of two wear a mask in schools regardless of vaccination status.
We are committed to protecting the health and safety of our students, staff and community, within the limitations of Governor Abbott’s Executive Order prohibiting school districts from requiring masks. With more than 25,000 Round Rock ISD students still ineligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine, Round Rock ISD strongly recommends that students, staff and families wear a mask while on campuses and in District facilities to reduce the transmission of the virus and to protect those who are not vaccinated.
We will also continue to host vaccination clinics and collaborate with our local health authorities to update our Student and Staff COVID-19 guidelines. Our mitigation strategies are varied, based on CDC and local health guidance, and include measures such as providing desk shields, improved ventilation, and social distancing in our classrooms.
