McNeil High School senior Victor Bailey, Jr. won the March 31 American Family Insurance High School Slam Dunk Championship in Phoenix, AZ. The event was nationally televised by CBS Sports in association with the NCAA Final Four.
Victor’s impressive stats as a competitor in the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) identified him as one of the top high school dunkers in the nation and secured him an invitation to the competition. At the event, he competed against eight other high school athletes from around the country also known for their dunk shots. He clinched his win by recording a perfect score of 40 on all three of his dunks.
Victor realized he was going to win the competition after one of his fellow competitors missed their second dunk.
“After you miss a couple dunks it affects your energy, so I felt his energy go down and realized if I got a clean dunk then I’d win,” Victor said. “I tried to top the other people’s energy and it worked out for the best.”
Victor signed a letter of intent with the University of Oregon, where he will play basketball in the fall. When he’s not making dunk shots, Victor enjoys watching movies. He said he’s fascinated by the fact movie makers can create new worlds.
“Victor is a good leader, good worker, great in the hallways and a pretty good player,” said Darrell Hagemann, McNeil head basketball coach. “He’s helped us win two district championships in his sophomore and junior years, and we’ve made the playoffs all four years he’s been here.”
