Deep Wood Elementary School students joined nearly 60,000 Texas students April 3 to kick off “Texas Reads One Book” with an online reading led by Dallas Cowboy’s Head Coach Jason Garrett.
This is the third year Garrett has helped kick off the statewide reading program. The 2017 “Texas Reads One Book” selection is “The Lemonade War” by Jacqueline Davies
“One of the things we talk about all the time here with the Dallas Cowboys is if you want to become a better football player, you have to practice,” Garrett said. “If you want to become a better reader, you have to practice. It’s fun to read. Read by yourself; read with your family. But just read.”
This is Deep Wood’s first year participating in “Texas Reads One Book.” Every Deep Wood student received a copy of the book as well as a letter sent to parents encouraging them to read every night to their child for the next three weeks.
“We wanted our families to know that reading aloud at home is valuable because it better prepares their child to be an effective reader and promotes a love of reading,” Deep Wood Principal Reba Mussey said. “We are working to build a community of readers at our school and throughout our state. Everyone —students, parents, teachers, even support staff — will be participating together. We also sent a book and invited Superintendent Dr. Flores, Round Rock Mayor Alan McGraw and Round Rock Police Chief Allen Banks to read Lemonade Wars with us!”
Schools also received daily trivia, discussion guides, financial literacy activities, and activities for parents to get involved with their child.
“I’ve read books to my brother before but I’m really excited to read this with my whole family and friends,” said Ivy Lynn, Deep Wood first-grade student. “I’ve never received anything for free before and I’m looking forward to seeing what happens in the Lemonade War Book.”
