The gym at Hernandez Middle School received a facelift after TDIndustries offered to grant the wish of a new paint job when they heard about the need from the United Way of Williamson County.
At the urging of students and staff, Desiree Le, Hernandez International Baccalaureate (IB) coordinator, originally made the request during the United Way’s Day of Caring, hosted at Hernandez (DATE). When they were unable to make the project happen on that day, the United Way of Williamson County reached out to TDIndustries. The company places a high value on giving back and couldn’t wait to get started, according to Sandra Sullivan, TDIndustries accounts payable manager.
Sullivan coordinated the project for TDIndustries. She worked with Hernandez to figure out what was needed, worked with the Round Rock ISD maintenance department to make sure all the appropriate forms were complete and found the funding needed to pay for the paint and supplies. B. Moore Construction in Cedar Park donated the funds for the project.
Hernandez Athletic Coordinator Karen Huffman said her reasons for wanting the gym painted were personal.
“Why did we want to paint our gym? It’s simple, to give back to our kids,” Huffman said. “We wanted to give them a facility that they can walk in and be proud to compete in. To build pride and traditions in. A facility our community can be proud to say is representative of the great kids and the community we have at Hernandez.”
Coach Huffman said the students were excited to walk in and see the newly painted walls and hear about other updates that are to come.
“I like the new gym colors. It adds more of a pop to our school,” said Joseph Betz, Hernandez sixth-grade student. “It adds something new to be proud of.”
