The McNeil High School marching band is embracing multiple changes this year, including new uniforms, new staff and a brand new marching style.

The Maverick band will debut new uniforms and bring a straight-leg marching style to the field this year in “City Scapes.” The performance chronicles a full day in a busy city. From the early morning alarm clock and morning work commute to the sunset and nightlife, the band brings the big city to life.

“The show evokes lots of imagery that we want to portray,” said Jason Dimiceli, head band director. “We have flags that look like taxi cabs and traffic and it’s really good music.”

The show consists of contemporary classical music by composer Richard Danielpour, including the compositions “Urban Dances” and “Celestial Nights.”

The McNeil marching band will perform the show at each football halftime show as well as during the district’s annual Festival of Bands, Oct. 5. The event will be held at Kelly Reeves Athletic Complex at 6:30 p.m.

The change in marching styles from bent-knee to straight-leg marching is the latest effort to make students more successful on the field, Dimicelli said.

“It’s a big deal to change marching styles,” Dimiceli said. “It’s easier to look consistent as a group with a straight leg so it’s going to make our kids more successful.”

Along with the new marching style, the Maverick band has also welcomed new staff this year.

Dimiceli stepped into the lead role after 11 years at McNeil serving as the associate band director. Associate Director Ronnie Pruitt is new to the program and previously served at Ridgeview and Cedar Valley middle schools. Also new to the band this year is Mike Champagne, assistant director and percussion specialist.

“New uniforms, new directors, new technique — this year has been a series of new things for the McNeil band,” said Annie Wang, head drum major. “I look forward to showing everyone the new image we have this year, both in our music and our marching. I’m very excited for our competition season and the band’s opportunities to showcase our hard work.”
