Walsh Middle School Teacher Seleta Carter learned to love education through years of hard work as a student in Round Rock ISD. It was that passion for education that drove her to a career in education, eventually returning to Round Rock ISD as an educator.

Carter, who teaches eighth-grade math, has been selected as the 2017 Teacher of the Year at Walsh. Carter has been an educator for 14 years, three of which have been at Walsh.

As a student, Carter said she struggled in elementary school, gained confidence in herself in middle school and eventually learned to truly love learning in high school. Carter now strives to help students much like herself.

“I began to recognize how I love to walk along students and help them learn,” Carter said. “I am still driven by the student who is reluctant and who may not learn like the average student. I am also equally driven by the high-performing student who needs just as much encouragement and assistance so they may achieve at highs that amaze even themselves.”

Every year begins as a jigsaw puzzle, Carter said. Teachers have to find the correct pieces that eventually reveal how each student learns, further informing how educators can tailor lessons to help all students succeed.

“I want my students to know I am in this journey with them every step of the way,” Carter said. “We all need someone to believe in us when the struggle may seem too difficult. It is my hope that at the end of the year, my students say they have learned to believe in themselves and have learned academic skills along the way.”

Carter continuously goes above and beyond to ensure students are successful, Walsh Principal Toni Hicks said. A kind and respectful educator, Carter frequently works beyond the school day to help anyone in need.

“Seleta Carter is a master teacher and most importantly a kind person,” Hicks said. “It is an honor to work with Seleta and we are lucky to have her serve the students, staff and families at Walsh.”
