Round Rock High School Teacher and Coach Kurt Reeves has modeled his career after his mother and coaches, who collectively inspired him to serve students.

Reeves, who teaches biology and coaches football and boys basketball, has been selected as the 2017 Teacher of the Year for Round Rock. Reeves has been an educator for five years, two of which have been at Round Rock.

Reeves learned from coaches growing up that he could improve others in an athletics setting while his mother, who taught biology for 24 years, taught him that he could make a big impact in the classroom as well, he said.

“I take pride in my career as a teacher and I want to do everything in my power to ensure that kids are learning when they walk into my classroom,” Reeves said. “Although my students may not remember all of the content we cover, it is my main objective to create lifelong learners and make sure they always remember how to learn.”

Teachers create the foundation for the future, Reeves said. As he walks into his classroom daily, Reeves strives to get students excited about the material and its relevancy in the real world.

“I know what it means to work hard and I apply this to my approach in the classroom as well as the expectations I have for my students,” Reeves said. “Every student can learn and it is my job, as a teacher, to create the environment and the opportunities for high levels of learning to take place.”

Reeves is an outstanding biology teacher and coach who continually cool, calm and collected as he leads his students and athletes, Round Rock Principal Natalie Nichols said.

“Mr. Reeves is conscious of the diversity of his students and the diversity of their education and makes decisions that positively affect all of them,” Nichols said. “He sees their differences, not as deficits, but as opportunities. Coach Reeves is cool on an epic level.”
