To welcome the new superintendent of Round Rock ISD, the district will host a come and go reception for Dr. Steve Flores Monday, October 14, 2013 at the Raymond E. Hartfield Performing Arts Center, 5800 McNeil Drive, Austin. The reception is from 4 to 6 p.m.

Flores was officially named the new superintendent September 19. He was announced as the lone finalist for the position August 23. He began his new leadership duties October 1.

Flores has served as Harlingen Consolidated ISD’s Superintendent since July 2008. Prior to working in Harlingen, he served the students of Dallas ISD, first as the Area VI Superintendent, then Deputy Superintendent and then finally Chief of Staff. He previously worked as an assistant superintendent for both Pflugerville and Round Rock ISDs. While at Round Rock ISD, he briefly filled the Acting Superintendent role in 2005.

Flores began his educational career as a paraprofessional working for three years in San Angelo ISD while completing his bachelor’s degree. He then went on to become a teacher and coach, followed by serving as a vice principal at Central High School and then a principal at Edison Junior High School in San Angelo.

While finishing his doctorate from the University of Texas at Austin in educational administration, Flores worked as the Executive Assistant for Special Projects for the Texas Association of School Administrators. He earned his superintendent’s certificate from Texas Tech University and his master’s and bachelor’s degrees from Angelo State University.

He is married to Amy, who was a teacher at Fern Bluff Elementary from 1999 to 2006 and currently teaches in Harlingen. They have two sons, Joshua and Zachary.

Flores replaces Jesús H. Chávez who retired from the position September 30. He will serve as the Adviser to the Superintendent until the end of December, when his contract expires.
