Thanks to the partnership with the YMCA, six Round Rock ISD elementary schools now have Esports labs. Students can sign up for teams and collaborate on games like Minecraft and Rocket League, all while building communication and learning how to work with others to accomplish a goal.

Westwood High School students and staff are celebrating the completion of the school’s new two-story wing with math classrooms and an art studio. These upgrades include a second wing that houses a new band hall, orchestra and choir rooms, and two large dance studios. The major campus upgrades were made possible through the 2018 Voter Approved Bond.

Exploring Forensic Science

Several Round Rock ISD high schools offer a law enforcement career path and forensic science as part of the curriculum. Students not on the path can also sign up for forensic science as a science elective. During this class students learn about everything from fingerprints to blood spatter patterns, to performing autopsies to determine cause of death. Two Westwood freshmen won the prize of a lifetime! Mya and Lucy won an all-expenses paid trip to New York to see Hamilton and meet the cast and crew afterward. The duo was selected after writing and performing a poem about Aaron Burr’s daughter, Theodosia. Watch this video to hear all about the contest and the adventure that awaits them.

Watch Blackland Prairie third-grade teacher Candi Tenbush get the surprise of the year! This week, she was named a finalist in the H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards and received a prize of $1,000 in front of her class. Next, she will head to San Antonio to see if she takes home the main prize. If she wins, she and her campus will each receive a check for $25,000. Rishik Boddeti, a junior at Westwood High School, was inspired by his grandfather to create an app to help diagnose early-onset dementia. He hopes those using the app can get the help they need more quickly and plan for a better future.

The Spirit Exchange Program is new to Round Rock ISD this year. The program brings teachers from all over the world into the classroom across the District. Program participants can teach in the U.S. for up to three years before retiring to their home countries, all while interacting with their classroom back home during each school week.

The Texas Education Agency describes Advanced African American Ethnic Studies as an elective course in which students learn about Black American history and cultural contributions. This course assists students in understanding issues and events from multiple perspectives. This course develops an understanding of Black American culture’s historical roots, especially regarding social, economic, and political interactions within the broader context of United States history.
