We’re excited to announce that Derek Ward is Westwood High School‘s new athletic coordinator and head football coach.

Ward has more than 20 years of experience in education and coaching. Most recently, he served the Katy ISD community as Freeman High School’s defensive coordinator, assistant head coach and head coach of track and field.

Ward’s leadership and athletic program development have been at the forefront of his education career. His commitment to teaching student-athletes focuses on character development, leadership training, and promoting a positive academic and athletic career.

Ward said joining the Westwood community is an honor.

“My family and I are thrilled to become a part of this outstanding community,” he said. “We are eager to contribute to the continued success of Westwood. I know it has a rich tradition of athletic achievement, and I am excited to build upon that legacy.”

Ward is a member of the Texas High School Coaches Association, the Texas Track and Field Coaches Association, and the Greater Houston Football Coaches Association and has been a featured guest speaker at multiple coaching clinics.

Area Superintendent Zac Oldham said he is excited for Ward to join the Westwood team.

“Coach Ward brings a history of successful experiences on the playing fields and in the classroom,” Oldham said. “I look forward to seeing him build on the tradition of excellence at Westwood High School.”

Westwood Principal Erin Campbell also extended a warm welcome to Ward.

“We are thrilled to bring Coach Ward into our Warrior family,” she said. “His energy, experience and drive for excellence will propel our athletics programs into a new chapter of success.”

Ward holds a bachelor’s degree in history from Texas State University and a master’s degree in coaching and athletics administration from Concordia University-Irvine.

His first day at Westwood High School is March 24.
