Ridgeview Middle School‘s Esports team, the RMS Champs, is ranked the number one school nationwide. The team earned the designation from the Middle School Esports League Central Division for Rocket League 2v2.

Esports is short for electronic sports, which is competitive, organized video gaming. It’s part of a quickly growing international program, the National Association of Collegiate Esports, found at over 180 colleges and universities.

The RMS Champs team consists of two eighth-graders, Nathan and Easton, who beat out over 88 other US teams.

Ridgeview Middle School Esports coach and mentor Robin Young said students like Nathan and Easton are gaining invaluable skills while having fun and enjoying success.

“Joining an Esports league helps students build teamwork, critical thinking, and leadership skills.“ Young said. “These platforms foster a sense of belonging, enhance academic and technical abilities, and provide opportunities for personal growth and career exploration.”

Every week, the RMS Champs gather for practice sessions where they hone their skills in competitive games like Rocket League™.

“I chose Esports because I had a great teacher who supported me every step of the way, plus it was great to have my friend competing by my side,” Easton said. His RMS Champs teammate, Nathan, agrees, “It’s a great experience to be part of Esports, especially if you have a friend who joins too.”

Together, they plan to continue to work on their gaming strategy, communication, and leadership while planning to continue their Esports journey through high school.
