The Department of Access and Opportunity proudly presents December’s installment of Your Voice, Your Story, a series highlighting diversity and the many unique cultures within our community.

Jewish people worldwide will soon celebrate Hanukkah, the eight-day holiday commemorating the rededication of the Second Temple.

For Westwood High School senior Sawyer G., it’s a deeply personal celebration.

“I’ve celebrated Hanukkah my entire life,” said Sawyer. “The first Hebrew words I learned came from the prayer we recite each of the eight nights. No matter where I am, who I’m with, or who we’ve lost, Hanukkah is a staple of December and my family.”

Sawyer is originally from New York, home to one of the largest Jewish populations outside of Israel.

“Coming from New York City, Austin was certainly a culture shock,” he said. “I miss the delis and security of New York, but I’ve found a great community of Jews here. It’s made me realize I can find myself in religion no matter where I am.”

Sawyer said he believes the holiday allows Jews to better understand their ancestors. He named his mother as his biggest inspiration.

“She’s fought her entire life for what she believes in and for others,” he said. “From when I was a young child to becoming a 6’4” adult, she’s always fought for me, even when I didn’t need or want it.”

Sawyer encouraged his peers to engage with Jewish culture and its values.

“We’re committed to family, education, and most importantly, asking questions,” he said. “From a young age, we’re taught that questions are the path to knowledge. By questioning everything — from the status quo to our own identity — you can find clarity and a path forward.”
