Westwood High School science teacher Chris Mihealsick received a surprise visit from district leadership Wednesday morning, where she learned she’s a finalist in the secondary category for Texas Teacher of the Year.
Mihealsick is one of three secondary finalists selected from the Teacher of Year region winners from school districts across the state. This program, sponsored by the Texas Association of School Administrators, honors elementary and secondary educators who go above and beyond for their students and demonstrate outstanding leadership on campus.
Mihealsick was named Region 13’s Teacher of the Year in August and was previously named Round Rock ISD’s Secondary Teacher of the Year in May.
Mihealsick’s work as a great teacher goes far beyond just delivering lessons. She inspires her students’ curiosity and ignites their passion for learning, growing their confidence and self-worth. Mihealsick’s dedication and commitment in the classroom leave a lasting imprint on her students’ approach to challenges, interactions with others, and pursuit of their goals.
“I am so honored. There are so many good teachers at the district, regional, and state levels,” said Mihealsick. “I really have a heart for teaching and work hard to keep growing, learning, and doing the best I can for every group of students each year. It’s humbling to be recognized.”
Mihealsick exemplifies the heart and dedication of what it means to be an outstanding educator, said Westwood High School Principal Erin Campbell.
“Her passion for teaching and unwavering commitment to her students’ success is truly inspirational. Beyond her classroom impact, Mrs. Mihealsick is generous with her collegial support and mentorship and is a tremendous teacher leader on our campus,” said Campbell.
Mihealsick has been an educator for 23 years, and has spent 17 of those years serving the Westwood community.
The Texas Teacher of the Year winners—one for elementary and one for secondary—will be announced on Oct. 25 at a luncheon celebrating all finalists’ outstanding achievements.
