Summer is coming to an end here at Round Rock ISD, and the district’s various summer camps for all ages have officially come to a close.

This week, we joined the Cupcake Creations camp held at Chandler Oaks Elementary School.

Camp attendees spent their days learning about baking; along with teamwork, and problem-solving skills, while leaning into their creativity.

“Today, students are taking everything they’ve learned to produce their final product,” said Francine Huang, with NERDY Cooks. “It gives them a lot of autonomy, so they can actually practice and explore! If they mess up, we get to wonder why and how we can fix that the next time.”

Huang said her goal for the class was to get kids excited about cooking. With plenty of eager bakers in attendance, it’s safe to say her goal was a success.

“I like piping and baking cupcakes!” said incoming 5th grader, Shruti Dave. “We baked different flavored cupcakes like lemon, peppermint, orange, and coconut! They’ve all been really yummy tasting.”

Dave said she’s also made new friends, learned how to dye her cupcakes, and made sprinkles.

The Round Rock ISD summer camps we’ve profiled are just a handful of the many options that have helped guide and grow students’ skills while keeping them engaged and helping them make new friends throughout the summer.

Director of Enrichment, Raine Maggio stressed the importance of programs like these.

“Round Rock ISD is happy to provide summer programs covering a wide range of activities that match the interests of our student population,” said Maggio. “These programs give students an opportunity to explore their areas of interest, find a new passion, and grow in their sense of belonging as part of our community.”

In the fall, students will be able to continue learning in Round Rock ISD after-school programs. Enrollment for those camps begins August 1.
