It’s graduation season in Round Rock ISD! To celebrate, we’re showcasing seniors from across the district.

Cedar Ridge senior Tyra Thompson made a name for herself as a varsity softball player.

She said she picked up the game at the age of 8 because her friend was playing.

“At that time, you kind of do whatever each other did,” she said. “So we started playing softball at Balcones.”

It didn’t take long for the love of the game to become a part of her.

From middle school, to travel ball, to high school… Tyra said she thinks she has spent every available moment of her time playing softball.

“Softball has always been like an outlet for me,” she said. “You know, having bad days, I could just go out to the field and hit the ball. I knew from that moment, that’s what I wanted to do in life.”

Cedar Ridge softball coach Kelsi Weseman said Tyra has been instrumental to the Raiders over the years.

“Tyra brings an incredible amount of power to our lineup,” said Weseman. “She’s a very patient and disciplined hitter who does a great job of hitting for power and getting on base when we need her.”

This past summer, Tyra took part in a softball camp at her mother’s alma mater, Prairie View A&M University.

Afterward, she knew Prairie View was the college for her, and as it turned out the coaches felt the same way! They offered Tyra a full-ride scholarship to play center field for the Panthers.

“Prairie View was a really good option for me,” said Tyra. “I love Coach Bland! He’s a great guy and I really, really like that school. I’m really glad I made a good decision.”

When she isn’t playing ball, Tyra serves as a mentor to younger players on her team. She also enjoys hanging out with her younger sister and catching up on her favorite shows.

“Right now, my favorite thing about being in high school is helping younger girls. Like the JV team, I love mentoring them. I try to motivate them as best I can and help them out,” she said. “It makes me feel great.”

Tyra will be studying either Kinesiology or Sports Medicine at Prairie View A&M University in the Fall.

Good luck, Tyra!
