Round Rock ISD’s Board of Trustees voted Thursday to approve funds for the construction of a permanent Early College High School (ECHS) structure on the Austin Community College (ACC) site, and to give permission to the District to begin designing plans for the expansion of the Stony Point High School cafeteria. Both campuses and projects were included as part of the voter-approved Bond 2018.
For ECHS, the District has worked with ACC to come to an agreement that will allow the facility to be built on the Round Rock Campus of ACC. The total estimated cost of construction for the new building, which would be maintained and managed by Round Rock ISD, is $33 million. Originally, the 2018 Bond Referendum included $15 million for the purchase of land, the master plan design, and phase one construction for an Early College High School on the Austin Community College site, however, there were insufficient funds to complete the project at that time. The funds approved by the Board, in addition to the ACC partnership, provide enough for construction to take place.
Another project the Board revisited was the expansion of Stony Point High School’s Cafeteria. Thursday, the District proposed entering a design phase that could potentially increase the total amount of seating offered to at least 790. Originally $707,000 was allocated to enclose the existing covered porch and increase the interior seating capacity by 100 seats. However, the allocated amount was not enough to cover the entire project and needs of Stony Point High School. The District hopes entering a design phase will give us a better understanding of the total scope of undertaking the complete project.
“I’m grateful for the support of our board,” said Superintendent, Dr. Hafedh Azaiez. “Approving these projects helps us better serve our students and meet their needs.”
