Student-athletes from Round Rock and Westwood high schools took home some of the top awards during the state University Interscholastic League (UIL) Swim Meet in February.
From Westwood, Sonny Wang took home first place, and the title of state champion, in the 100 Free and the silver medal in the 50 Free.
From Round Rock Hannah O’Leary placed third in the 200 Individual Medley.
“Our state athletes did amazing this year.” Round Rock Swim Coach Thomas Arredondo said. “Getting to state alone is a huge accomplishment, and then all of our athletes finaled as well – that’s all a coach could ask for. Based on state wide times we’d seen, we thought Hannah had a solid shot at a medal, and she pulled it out. I’m proud of her and the rest of our athletes. We left the meet with four new team records and times that will be considered for All American recognition so it was a good weekend. Excited to see what they’re able to accomplish next season.”
“The run from district to regional to state is a real physical and mental challenge,” Westwood Swim Coach Matt Mcbrearty said. “Our kids were awesome. They were tough and relentless and just wanted to be excellent, and I think they succeeded. Sonny Wang’s state championship in the 100 free capped-off the season in a pretty magical way, but the whole journey was a special one.”
