Late Thursday (Sept. 16), Round Rock ISD learned that a judge in Williamson County signed an order temporarily prohibiting the District from enforcing its mask requirement. On Friday, Sept. 17., the Third Court of Appeals, issued a hold on the order, meaning Round Rock ISD can continue with its mask requirement.
As Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Hafedh Azaiez shared in his Sept. 16. message, the current mask requirement approved by the Board of Trustees will expire at 11:59 p.m. tonight, Friday, Sept. 17. The Board intended to consider an extension of the requirement at its meeting on Sept. 14, but the meeting had to be adjourned early. The Board is scheduled to consider the mask requirement again at a meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 22. District administration is proposing the Board approve a recommendation to establish a mask matrix, which would connect mask requirements to the risk stages determined by Williamson and Travis County health authorities. If approved, Round Rock ISD will continue to require masks while our counties are in Red/Stage 5 and Orange/Stage 4. In the meantime, Round Rock ISD asks staff, students, and visitors to continue wearing masks inside District facilities when at least six feet of distance can not be maintained.
