The Round Rock High School varsity boys and girls gymnastics teams finished in third place at the 50th Annual Texas High School Gymnastics State Championship, the highest the teams have placed in 21 years.

The third-place finish for both the girls and boys teams was the best both teams have placed since 1995 when the girls team won the state championship. The boys team also set a new school record with a combined team score of 328.95.

“We’re here every day after school and the team works really hard,” Gymnastics Coach Thomas Overman said. “Gymnastics is usually an individual sport, but being part of a school team in a high school setting is a really unique experience for gymnasts.”

Round Rock senior and girls gymnastics team captain Faith Green was named 2016 All Around State Champion after posting the highest combined score of the contest. She also earn third place on the bars and beam competitions.

“Winning was surreal,” Green said. “I didn’t even expect it at the meet so when they called my name I was shocked. Being on the team has been really fun.”

Round Rock senior and boys team captain Drew Carr was named the 2016 Pommel Horse State Champion and finished in second place in the all-around competition and in the parallel bars competition. He also received the only perfect score in the rings competition.

“The state competition is the most fun competition I’ve ever had in my life,” Carr said. “Placing second made me feel like everything I’ve done before this is worth it. I’ve been doing gymnastics for 14 years and it’s been a big part of my life.”
