The Service Coalition of Round Rock (SCORR) scores big points with Round Rock ISD for their efforts to support students. SCORR was recognized at the Thursday Board of Trustees meeting as a Distinguished Partner of the District. Organizations that comprise SCORR include Annie’s Way, Lions Club, Rotary, El Amistad, Kiwanis and Just Serve.
SCORR is a united group of individuals who help those less fortunate in our community, especially youth deemed at-risk. As volunteers work with students, they emphasize friendship, diversity, integrity, leadership, and above all, self-determination.
“We want these kids to know they can be successful and that the community supports them,” SCORR member Claudio Cruz said. “We are teaching them self-determination and grit.”
SCORR members take advantage of any opportunity to help our students. They promote career development via apprenticeship and mentoring programs. The group sponsors summer camps for youth with physical disabilities, establishing an atmosphere that inspires a “can do attitude.” They also participate in activities designed to level the playing field for our youth which include vision and hearing screenings, acquiring adaptive equipment, stocking food pantries, acknowledging the day of thanks (Thanksgiving) by serving a free meal for the poor and helping to develop a park for play that all can enjoy no matter their physical challenges.
One of the latest events organized this year was the Round Rock Noon Lions Club annual family-oriented 5K Kid’s Fun Run to support Round Rock’s Play for all Abilities Park. Cruz said this was meant to be more than a run, but an opportunity to develop grit, determination, camaraderie and service to others.
Through the years, the service groups comprising the service coalition have contributed more than $2 million in college scholarships to students destined to be the “leaders of tomorrow.”
“We are privileged to have so many dedicated service organizations that support the students in our District,” Superintendent of Schools Steve Flores, Ph.D. said. “The work SCORR is doing is tremendous.”
