The Westwood High School Tennis team made campus history by taking home the gold during the University Interscholastic League (UIL) 6A State Championship competition on Thursday.
This is the first championship title the team has earned in the campus’ history. Before this season, Westwood hadn’t been to the state tournament in the past 21 years.
The team clinched the title with a 10-7 win over Houston Memorial in the Class 6A final held at Texas A&M University on Thursday. The team also had to face the Class 6A State Runner-Up Cypress Ranch, which they were able to breeze through with a 10 -1 win.
“We beat 12 Top 25 schools this year,” Westwood coach Travis Dalrymple said. “We beat No. 2 Plano West, No. 1 Memorial, No. 4 Amarillo, Westlake, and Vandegrift. The kids just kept rising to the occasion. It was fun to be a part of.”
Their 19-0 season has also included earning the Area and District champion titles earlier this year.
Dalrymple also earned state and region honors this year by being named the Texas Tennis Coaches Association (TTCA) 6A State Coach of the Year and the Region 2 Coach of the Year. Both awards were presented to him as a result of his passion and dedication to supporting the game of tennis and promoting success within his organization.
