Westwood High School senior Alyssa Geerts will have her artwork showcased on an Interstate 35 billboard after being selected as the winner of the first Round Rock ISD Youth Art Month Billboard Design contest.
Alyssa created the art piece to align with the Youth Art Month theme “I’m Created to Create.” The piece will be displayed on the southbound lane near exit 250 in Round Rock and will be showcased the week of March 20-25.
“I’m so excited,” Alyssa said. “A lot of artists just want people to see their art and I’ve been given this opportunity for hundreds of thousands of people to see it, so it’s really cool.”
The billboard is sponsored through a partnership with the Round Rock ISD Fine Arts Department, the City of Round Rock and Lamar Advertising to promote art created by youth in the community during Youth Art Month. The billboard competition was run within the District’s secondary visual arts programs with work selected by the 2016-2017 Youth Art Month Design Committee.
Youth Art Month is an annual observance each March to emphasize the value of art education for all children and to encourage support for quality school art programs.
“I am excited that the City of Round Rock and Lamar Advertising have partnered with Fine Arts for this inaugural Youth Art Month billboard,” said Tim Lowke, Round Rock ISD assistant director of visual and performing arts. “To showcase our amazing student talent has been a career long focus as this billboard has been 28 years in the making for our District celebration of Youth Art Month. Congratulations to Ms. Geerts for her incredible work!”
