Isaac Sorensen’s approach to learning includes seeing, touching and visualizing the problems he’s tasked to solve. His technique has made him the 2017 McNeil High School Salutatorian and earned him a place at Brigham Young University this fall studying mechanical engineering and pursuing minors in physics and mathematics.
Along with McNeil, Isaac also attended Cedar Valley Middle School during his time in Round Rock ISD. In addition to his course work, he performed in the wind ensemble, jazz band, full varsity orchestra and was selected as drum major for the 2016-2017 marching band. Also, he is a member of the National Honor Society, engineering club, French National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta Fraternity, science bowl team and competed in the science UIL, TEAMS competition and enjoys playing basketball. During his junior year, he was an Academy Ambassador.
Isaac cites being selected as drum major as the most impactful moment in his life – so far.
“In my short career, Isaac has been one of the most outstanding students I’ve ever encountered. He is dedicated and steadfast, brilliant and humble,” said Joshua Munoz, McNeil associate director of band. “He has made an undeniably positive mark on our band program and I look forward to seeing the amazing things he brings as he moves forward.”
Isaac credits the McNeil engineering program for deepening his passion for science and engineering. He acknowledges his engineering teacher Lisa Windolph as a source for his enthusiasm in the field.
“Mrs. Windolph has always been willing to work with me to fulfill my curiosities and endeavors within the classroom,” Isaac said. “Every conversation I’ve had with her always includes some laughing and I can feel her genuine sincerity towards all of her students. Her willingness to nurture my education sets an unprecedented example to me of how I want to live my life.”
Anxious to take the next steps into his future, Isaac is setting his sights on earning his Ph.D., improving energy systems and delving into aerospace.
