The Round Rock ISD Athletics and Food Services departments have been named recipients of a $25,080 Fuel Up to Play 60 grant from Dairy Max, which will fund smoothie equipment for cafeterias and athletics equipment at 10 District middle schools.
This is the third year the District has received the award. The most recent previous grant, awarded during the 2012-2013 school year, provided healthy food options like yogurt and fresh spinach to students at elementary schools and supported the functional fitness programs at middle schools.
“We are proud to team up with the Round Rock ISD Athletic Department for the third time to win this grant,” said Kelly Grones, Food Services Director. “Our District understands the need to support the whole student through education, physical activity and healthy food choices. We continue to challenge ourselves to enrich and nourish lives every day.”
Fuel Up to Play 60 is an in-school nutrition and physical activity program launched by the National Dairy Council and the National Football League, in collaboration with the United States Department of Agriculture, to help encourage today’s youth to lead healthier lives, according to the organization.
Equipment provided through the grant will offer more students the opportunity to use equipment during the same time they prepare for the culminating fit games event this spring, Assistant Athletic Director Susan Nix said.
“Fuel Up to Play 60 is all centered around fitness and nutrition,” Nix said. “This grant gives us an opportunity to celebrate fitness and good nutrition while helping our students learn and maintain healthy habits.”
