The Department of Access and Opportunity presents April’s installment of Your Voice, Your Story, a series highlighting diversity and the many unique cultures within our community.
This month, Round Rock ISD celebrates Diversity Month by sharing the experiences of Mariyam, a junior at Round Rock High School, who reflects on the significance of Ramadan for Muslim students.
“As a member of the Islamic faith, Ramadan is a deeply significant month that strengthens my spirituality and connection with God,” Mariyam said. “Throughout these 29 to 30 days, Muslims around the world fast from sunrise to sunset, refraining from food, water and ill behavior while striving for self-discipline, gratitude, and increased devotion.”
Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, is a sacred time of fasting, prayer and reflection for Muslims worldwide. This year, it began Feb. 28 and ended March 29, concluding with Eid al-Fitr, the “Festival of Breaking the Fast,” on March 30.
For students like Mariyam, balancing academic responsibilities with spiritual practices during Ramadan requires resilience and patience. Beyond her personal observance, Mariyam said she is also passionate about creating an inclusive environment for Muslim students throughout Round Rock ISD.
Inspired by her family’s experiences and the challenges faced by her community, she founded the Round Rock High School Muslim Student Association to provide a safe space for Muslim students to connect and discuss issues that affect them, both locally and globally.
“I believe that having a core group for Muslim students is essential—a sanctuary where we can build a strong community and safely discuss what’s happening in the world,” she said. “Especially in light of current conflicts… It is crucial to address the safety and well-being of all students, as these issues extend far beyond the Middle East and impact communities across continents.”
Through the MSA, Mariyam has led initiatives to promote cultural awareness and appreciation. Each year, she and her peers organize Ramadan gift distributions for Round Rock High School staff, curating boxes filled with cultural treats as a gesture of gratitude. She has also worked to secure a designated prayer room for students observing their faith.
“My faith is not just about personal growth, but also about fostering a community where everyone feels welcome and connected,” said Mariyam.
