Michelle Dean is the new principal of Joe Lee Johnson Elementary School

Dean brings 34 years of education experience to Round Rock ISD. Most recently, she has served the students and staff at Houston ISD. She was the Principal of Frank Black Middle School, where, in her first year, she improved the school from a C to an A rating and was named the Houston ISD Northwest Area Principal of the Year in 2023.

“I am honored and excited to have been chosen as the new Principal of Joe Lee Johnson Elementary. Though coming in during the middle of the year will be challenging, I look forward to finishing the year strong and working over the summer to prepare for an amazing year next year,” she said.

Dean says she is eager to meet and learn from the staff, student body and the Joe Lee Johnson community.

“Together, we will work to make Joe Lee Johnson a premier school in Round Rock ISD.”

Dean started her educational career as a teacher and coach at Deer Park High School. Over the next twenty years, she taught and coached at six other high schools before becoming the Assistant Principal at Bellaire High School. While Dean transitioned to Principal of Frank Black Middle School in 2020, she focused on collaborating with district and school leaders and implementing innovative curriculum initiatives to meet the diverse needs of students. She also cultivated strong relationships with students, families, staff, and the community.

Dean said she’s ready to hit the ground running at Round Rock ISD.

“I am honored and excited to have been chosen as the new Principal of Joe Lee Johnson Elementary.  Though coming in during the middle of the year will be challenging, I look forward to finishing the year strong and working over the summer to prepare for an amazing year next year,” she said.

McNeil Learning Community Area Superintendent Mya Mercer is excited to welcome Dean to Round Rock ISD.

“I am absolutely thrilled to have Ms. Dean join the Round Rock ISD campus leadership team and become a part of the Joe Lee Johnson family,” said Mercer.“Her extensive knowledge and experience, coupled with her dedication to the success of students and staff, make her an invaluable addition. I am confident in her ability to lead and drive the campus toward continued achievement, growth and equity.”

Dean holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Sam Houston State University and a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership from Stephen F. Austin State University.

Her first day at Joe Lee Johnson Elementary School will be March 24.
