Dear Round Rock ISD community,

Every two years, the Texas Legislature meets to pass the state’s budget and new legislation. These sessions last for up to 140 days. This year’s session began on January 14 and will run through June 2, 2025. Throughout the session and with the 89 days remaining, we are focused on the legislative priorities identified by our Board of Trustees.

My father, a retired teacher and passionate advocate for accessible education, greatly influenced my path as an educator. He thoughtfully designed lesson plans, always refining them to ensure his students gained both a deeper understanding and a broader perspective. He instilled in me the belief that education is one of the most powerful tools for changing lives and shaping communities. To him, education wasn’t just about learning—it was a fundamental right that every individual should have access to.

During the past few weeks, Central Texas school district superintendents, police chiefs, Trustees, and PTA members have been at the Texas Capitol advocating for public education to gain more support for safety, security, mental health and funding. Texas ranks 46th in the nation for per-student funding, falling $4,400 below the national average.

Standing on the Capitol steps alongside our passionate parents and community members at PTA Rally Day, my thoughts turned to my father. His unwavering belief that education is a fundamental right remains a guiding force in my life, shaping my purpose and reaffirming my commitment to public education every single day.

I’m not overstating it when I say this legislative session is pivotal for the future of Texas public education. We cannot turn our backs on the countless children who rely on public schools to equip them with the support and opportunities they need to thrive. Nor can we overlook the hundreds of thousands of dedicated educators and staff who pour their hearts into shaping the future of Texas students every day.

This is a statewide issue. While Texas has a $23.8 billion budget surplus, public schools are facing tough financial decisions. If school funding doesn’t increase, districts across Texas will struggle, forcing budget cuts that directly affect students. Our lawmakers have the power to put education first and support every Texas child. Giving students the education they deserve requires all of us to take action.

Your voice matters! Let our lawmakers know you stand for safe, well-funded schools and a strong future for Texas public education. Together, we can make a difference for our children!
