Swimmers from Round Rock and Westwood high schools earned medals at the UIL State Swimming and Diving Championships, held Feb. 21 and 22 at the Lee and Joe Jamail Swimming Center at the University of Texas.

Westwood’s Raphael W. claimed gold in the 100-yard breaststroke and added a silver medal in the 200-yard individual medley.

“Winning gold is the ultimate goal in high school swimming, it’s the highest you can get in competition, so it was definitely a really fulfilling achievement,” Raphael said. “I’m very thankful to my coaches and teammates for giving me the chance to get this far.”

The senior is committed to swimming at Duke University next school year.

Westwood also saw success in relay and individual events. The girls’ 200-yard medley relay team—NamAnh T., Grace X., Sophia H., and Violet H.—secured a bronze medal. Sophia also took bronze in the 100-yard butterfly, while Max L. earned third in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Round Rock High School’s Bucky G. rounded out the medalists, finishing third in the 500-yard freestyle.

Round Rock ISD Athletic Director Jeff Cheatham praised the student-athletes for their achievements.

“We’re incredibly proud of our swimmers for their dedication and hard work,” Cheatham said. “Competing at the state level is an amazing accomplishment, and bringing home medals is a testament to their perseverance and the strength of our programs.”
