Round Rock ISD chess lovers have a lot to celebrate these days!
Westwood High School junior, Tanvi Reddy, took home the top prize at the Texas Girls’ State Chess Championship hosted at the University of Texas at Rio Grande Valley in September.
She won first place in the High School Championship category, earning the title of High School Girls State Champion. Tanvi was also awarded a $3,000 scholarship to UT-RGV.
“My second time down in Brownsville to compete in this tournament was an absolutely amazing experience,” said Reddy. “Chess still faces a critical shortage of not just new female players, but initiatives to encourage existing ones. I hope to take the inspiration and encouragement I get from experiences like these to accomplish a big goal of mine, which is to establish an inclusive community for female players in Austin and work toward the same for the chess world as a whole.”
And Tanvi isn’t the only student flourishing in the chess world! Anirudh Kumar, a seventh-grader at Walsh Middle School, won the seventh-grade North Texas State Championship in late October.
Congratulations!
