Rodrigo Portillo has been named Round Rock ISD’s Assistant Superintendent of Academics.

Portillo has served as an Assistant Superintendent in Tornillo ISD since 2018. During that time, he led the development and implementation of campus improvement plans to meet district goals. In addition, he was responsible for the oversight of teaching and learning strategic programs, projects, and initiatives outlined in the district strategic plan to ensure they lead to maximum student achievement. Before his role as assistant superintendent, he worked as a staff developer at the national level for the AVID program and instructional math officer at Socorro ISD. His experience also includes multiple leadership and teaching positions at campuses in the El Paso region. He has 23 years of experience in education.

“I am beyond thrilled and fortunate to be named the Assistant Superintendent of Academics,” Portillo said. “I believe that all students deserve the opportunity to a high-quality education and access to today’s resources, and through shared beliefs and a shared language, we will continue to focus on student learning. I look forward to working with the teams as we foster empathy and effective relationships while serving all who rely on us to help make a difference.”

Portillo’s appointment to the Assistant Superintendent of Academics position follows the District’s decision to transform the Chief of Teaching and Learning role to two separate positions to better support the needs of students and further the work that impacts campuses, students and staff. With further staffing adjustments resulting from retirements within the department and restructuring, the positions will not result in any additional costs to the District. The Assistant Superintendent of Academics will focus on academic programming and the oversight of departments that support student populations such as special education and dyslexia. The Assistant Superintendent of Support Services will provide oversight and guide the work of the services and departments that support student talent and success such as fine arts, athletics and enrichment.

“We are excited to bring a new level of support to our campuses and students through the leadership of Rodrigo Portillo,” Superintendent Dr. Hafedh Azaiez said. “He is an exceptional instructional leader who possesses a drive to forge connections, foster collaboration and establish robust systems that boost the success of every student.”

Portillo earned his Master’s in Education Administration from the University of Phoenix and Bachelor’s in Criminal Justice from the University of Texas at El Paso.
