Pearson Ranch Middle School Dance Teacher Kelley Morgan has been named Dance Educator of the Year by the Texas Dance Educators Association (TDEA).
TDEA is a professional organization that allows dance educators the opportunity for staff development and networking. It provides professional development and works toward the betterment of dance education, and helps teachers provide quality dance education throughout Texas.
Morgan was nominated for the award by her peers. The application process involved submitting a lesson plan, a video of the lesson plan in action, and a personal statement of her professional accomplishments.
“I am surrounded by amazing and talented educators both in dance and other content areas, and to be selected as the Dance Educator of the Year is such an honor,” Morgan said. “ I am excited to be able to share my philosophy and way of teaching dance with the rest of the world. As dance educators, we do so much more than dance steps, and I want the world to see it! Finally, I am blessed to be a part of Round Rock ISD and the Round Rock ISD Dance Department. It is a special place to be!”
Morgan has been a dance educator for 23 years, all of which have been in Round Rock ISD. She initially became a dance educator to teach my students about her passion. However, as she grew as an educator, she realized that she was using the art of dance to teach her students to be open-minded, good humans while guiding them to find their creative voice in a safe environment of mutual and self-respect.
As an educator, she is most proud of her commitment to continuing to grow, she said. Every year, she reflects upon the past and asks herself how to fly higher and what she can do to improve how to bring the artistry of dance alive for her students. She is always looking to take on new challenges and isn’t afraid of failing, a mindset she tries to instill in her students.
“Kelley is a remarkable dance educator,” said Marla Valk, Round Rock ISD fine arts coordinator / dance. “She is always willing to go above and beyond. We are especially proud of her work with technology in the classroom. She always strives to give her dance students a truly immersive and interactive experience, creating a love and passion for the art form. Kelley deserves this award, and we are glad she is recognized for her work.”
Morgan will receive her award and represent Round Rock ISD and Pearson Ranch at the TDEA statewide convention in January.
