Making all of the right moves, Westwood High School students Tanvi Reddy and Kalia Wang took home some of the top prizes at Texas Girls’ State Chess Championship hosted at the University of Texas at Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV).
Together, they took home the second place title in the High School Team category. Individually, they each earned the title of Co-Champion in the High School category after both accumulated an individual score of 4.5 by the end of the tournament. In addition to the title, Kalia was also awarded a $3,000 scholarship to UTRGV.
“It felt really wonderful for us to win and share the title as well as win second place in teams, and we were proud of how we represented Westwood,” Tanvi said. “The event was organized very well, and being able to see and play with girls from all over the state was such a unifying and unique experience that we feel lucky to have taken part in!”
The duo will continue to compete this year and is hoping to participate in the Texas Super State Scholastic Chess Championships in March.
