Volleyball games are full of action and strategy. Players deliver crowd-pleasing moments with an ace, kill, or block. Volleyball is one of secondary school’s most popular team sports, and big plays are a huge part of the appeal.

Round Rock ISD middle and high school girls volleyball teams compete in the University Interscholastic League (UIL). High schools have four teams with 12-15 players on each team. Players can earn a spot on the Freshmen, Flex (Freshmen and Sophomores), Junior Varsity, or Varsity team. Members of the volleyball team practice every day, starting in August, preparing for regional tournaments in November.

“Volleyball is an exciting sport to play and watch. It’s physical from the first serve up until the final point,” said Eric Soto Cedar Ridge High School volleyball coach. “Players are passing, setting, hitting, blocking, digging, and serving the ball and can jump up to 300 times per match.”

In games, it’s six vs. six players. Play begins with a serve, and each team is allowed three contacts as the ball is volleyed across the net until it hits the floor on a team’s side. The team to first score 25 points wins. In a Varsity contest, a match is best three out of five games, with the deciding fifth game played to 15 points. For sub-varsity competitions, a match is best two out of three games.

Students interested in playing volleyball are encouraged to contact your campus volleyball coach. New students returning to or have not attended a Round Rock ISD school need to enroll at their zoned high school.
