The Round Rock ISD Board of Trustees appointed Dr. Kevin Johnson as the new Trustee for Place 1 during a special called meeting on July 25. Johnson replaces Dr. Jun Xiao, who announced his resignation earlier this year.

Johnson is the father of two students who attended and graduated from Stony Point High School and has extensive experience in education, serving as both a teacher and administrator.  From 2018-2021, he served as the statewide Career Technical Education Coordinator for the Texas Education Agency. He holds a doctorate in educational administration from the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, a master’s degree in educational leadership and policy studies from the University of Texas at Arlington, and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Louisiana at Monroe.

“My philosophy of board service is centered on restoring the commitment of academic excellence established by Round Rock ISD over the past two decades and one I experienced firsthand as a teacher, beginning in 2011, at Stony Point High School,” Johnson said. “I believe this begins with making evidence-based, data-driven decisions that serve the best interests of all learners in the Round Rock ISD system. I vow to listen to each side of all debates and apply sound logical judgment as we all attempt to recover the learning lost during a global pandemic and continue to provide high-quality educational experiences to our students.”

Johnson will be officially sworn in as a Board member in the coming days and will immediately begin duties as a Trustee.

“We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Johnson to the Board and look forward to working together for the benefit of our students, staff, and community,” Board President Amber Feller said. “His expertise, passion for public education, and advocacy for students are evident and I have no doubt that he will be a valuable addition to our team. ”

Johnson was selected for appointment after an interview and application process that took place from June 16 through July 12, 2022. He will serve until the November election when the Place 1 seat will be on the ballot.
