Karl Unger has been named the new principal of Joe Lee Johnson STEAM Academy.
Unger has served as the principal of Benjamin Banneker Elementary School in Kansas City since 2019. Before then, he was the Dean of Students at the Gregory-Lincoln Education Center in Houston. During his time as principal, he led the development of campus plans to increase student achievement and attendance and focused on equity. He also believes in the importance of lifelong learning. He is currently a doctoral candidate at the University of Southern Mississippi and is working towards receiving a National Principal Certificate for Equity and Excellence from San Diego State University. He has 19 years of experience in education.
“I am excited to embark on this journey with the students, staff, families, and the community of Joe Lee Johnson STEAM Academy,” said Unger. “Together, we will ensure that our students’ academic and social-emotional needs remain at the center of our work. Collaboratively, we will continue to promote a culture of EXCELLENCE in Teaching and Learning for everyone!”
