Every student matters. We are here to teach and nurture the potential in every Round Rock ISD student. We welcome ALL in our schools. Happy PRIDE Month to every LGBTQIA2S+ student, staff member, and the friends and families that support them!
Pride Month is recognized in June because it marks the Stonewall Riots of June 1969. The Stonewall Riots are considered a catalyst for the gay rights movement in the United States and worldwide.
The Stonewall Inn was a gay club located in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of New York City. The club was a place to belong, feel valued and be safe for the gay community. The New York City police raided the Stonewall Inn early on June 28, 1969. The New York State Liquor Authority initiated the police raid for selling alcohol without a license to known or suspected LGBT people. The raid ignited protests and riots lasting five days.
A year after the uprising, the first gay pride marches took place in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, and San Francisco to mark the anniversary. Within a few years, gay rights organizations were founded across the U.S. and worldwide.
Today, LGBTQIA2S+ Pride events are held annually in June in honor of the Stonewall Riots. The Stonewall National Monument was designated in 2016 across the street from the Stonewall Inn. And on June 6, 2019, New York City Police Commissioner James P. O’Neill rendered a formal apology for officers’ actions in 1969. We have come a long way since 1969. And although attitudes and injustices remain, the long-standing tradition of Pride Month promotes LGBTQIA+ dignity, equal rights, and self-affirmation.
On June 4, Round Rock Pride held its inaugural Pride Festival in downtown Round Rock’s Centennial Plaza. The festival crowd celebrated community diversity and promoted acceptance and love.
