Stony Point High School junior Amber Sorenson has twirled a baton for 13 years. She is one of the school’s two featured twirlers who perform at football games, pep rallies, and band events. Her twirling skills have earned her champion titles at state, regional, and UIL competitions. And after a nationwide contest in May 2021, Twirling to Fight Cancer, a nonprofit organization that partners with the Susan G. Komen Nevada Foundation, named Amber the Twirling to Fight Cancer High School Ambassador.

“I got involved with Twirling to Fight Cancer in the Summer of 2020,” said Amber. “I participated in the Susan G. Komen ‘Paint Nevada Pink,’ talent for the cure TikTok challenge and was selected to be a part of the campaign. I created a video of a twirling performance, and it showed for a month on billboards and the Susan G. Komen and T-Mobile websites.”

Amber sells spirit batons and donates the proceeds to Twirling to Fight Cancer. Sales of her spirit batons through her nonprofit’s website Amber’s Spirit Batons has raised $3,000 in donations for the cause to fight cancer.

“This cause is so important to me because my mom has Stage 4 cancer,” said Amber. “I want to do something to help raise money for the cause so that they can find a cure for her cancer one day.”

Amber is a member of the National Honor Society, a student in the Stony Point IB® program, a member of the school band and the varsity basketball team. Her goals include expanding her nonprofit to increase donations, twirling in college, majoring in biology, and going to medical school to become an orthopedic surgeon.
