First-graders at Redbud Elementary School collected and donated 800 pairs of socks and 100 toiletry care packages to help community members in need. The donation drive was a class service-learning project.

Students got the word out about their project with posters and encouraged their fellow students to ask their families to contribute socks and personal hygiene items. Next, the first-graders got to work sorting and assembling care packages. Then, they sent the donations to the Round Rock Service Center to help community members in need.

“Seeing our Redbud first-graders impassioned and empowered to make a difference in their community is truly inspiring,” said Kim Connelly, Redbud Elementary School principal. “I’m incredibly proud of the first-grade team for leading our remarkable students in this important initiative.”

Service-learning projects provide students opportunities to learn more about their capacity for serving others and their relationship as community citizens.
