Round Rock ISD’s Herrington Elementary Spanish Language and Culture Institute has earned the distinction of being named the 2021 Coat for Kids, Coat Drive Champions. The coat drive competition was open to over 250 Austin area elementary schools. It was Herrington Elementary that took the top spot.
United in their cause to provide new and gently worn warm coats and jackets for Central Texas children in need, collectively, the campus community secured over 300 coats to donate to Coats for Kids during a 15-day campaign.
The PTA, staff, and students worked together to promote the campaign drive by placing donation bins around the school, making school announcements, using social media and email.
“We try to involve the community as much as possible,” said Herrington Elementary PTA President Rachel Zander. “We promoted the coat drive in our neighborhood using social media so that everyone had the opportunity to help support the coat drive without having a student at the school.”
Herrington has a tradition of supporting the Coats for Kids drive with previous wins as champion and runner-up. Coats for Kids is in its 35th year of providing new and gently worn warm winter coats for the children of Central Texas.
“The Herrington community makes me feel proud,’ said Herrington Elementary Principal, Julie Nelson. “Their determination and commitment to help others is inspiring. This community has a beautiful heart and I am glad to be a part of it.”
