Receiving the surprise of the year on the field of Kelly Reeves Athletic Complex, Round Rock High School English Teacher Susana Fletcher was named the District’s 2022 Secondary Teacher of the Year (TOY). She received the good news during the District’s annual TOY Celebration on May 5, sponsored by the Round Rock ISD Partners in Education (PIE) Foundation and A+ Federal Credit Union.
“English is never just about reading and writing,” Fletcher said. “Sure, our class slogan is ‘Read hard stuff; write smart things,’ but learning extends past Shakespeare and expository essays. When I am tuned into my students’ hearts and allow them to co-facilitate, we find that every day is a lesson, and learning can come from anywhere. As one of my students remarked, ‘Miss, you can make a lesson outta anything!’”
Fletcher was named the Teacher of the Year at Round Rock High School and was selected among 20 secondary educators to represent the District at the regional competition. She has been an educator for eight years, six of which have been serving the Round Rock community in her current role.
Fletcher believes that every student should be allowed to be themselves in the classroom and that it’s crucial to meet students where they are in life. She also works collaboratively with them to create an effective and supportive learning environment. By doing this and fully supporting her students, she believes they choose to flourish.
Fletcher will continue to the 2022 Region 13 Secondary Teacher of the Year competition, where she will represent Round Rock ISD in hopes of becoming the 2022 Texas Secondary Teacher of the Year.
“Susana Fletcher works so incredibly hard to make sure students are getting all the support they need,” Round Rock High School Principal Matt Groff said. “If a student doesn’t show up and she can’t reach them or the parents, she conducts home visits. I have never seen a teacher work so hard, and her passion for teaching is extremely evident in everything she does. She never gives up or stops trying to present and give her best.”
