The Round Rock ISD Board of Trustees will approve the name for Elementary 35 at its regular meeting scheduled for April 15, 2021.
A committee made up of seven citizens, each selected by one of the seven Board members, one Board member appointed by the Board President, and one District administrator appointed by the Acting Superintendent of Schools, met in February and March to consider potential names, and narrow the list of nominations by the community to three recommendations:
- Juanita Craft Elementary School
- Redbud Elementary School
- Bright Lake Elementary School
The Board heard a presentation by Stony Point Learning Community Area Superintendent Natalie Nichols at its regular meeting on Thursday, March 25, 2021, on the committee process and how members narrowed the list to three possibilities.
The committee chose Juanita Craft, a Round Rock born civil rights activist and educator, because of her connection to the community, her dedication to children and public education, and her historic contributions to the Civil Rights Movement. Redbud Elementary was inspired by both the setting of the school adjacent to Old Settlers Park and the design of the school. The campus design includes a giant tree as a central focal point for both the school’s entrance and library, and the park is home to an orchard of redbud trees that serves as a memorial to beloved community members who have passed away. Bright Lake Elementary was a top choice because it provides a sense of place — the lake is a beautiful and popular feature of Old Settlers Park — and, much like the name Redbud Elementary, is also evocative of nature.
While Trustees are not bound by policy to select one of the three recommendations, they indicated at their Thursday meeting that they will select one of them at their regular meeting on April 15, 2021.
Round Rock ISD Elementary School 35 will open in the Fall of 2021 and is located on the northeast side of Round Rock at 1500 Ty Cobb Place. The school was approved by voters in the 2018 Bond to provide space for the growing student population and relieve overcrowding at Herrington Elementary School.
