After more than seven years serving as Superintendent of Schools for the Round Rock Independent School District and 37 years in public education, Steve Flores, Ph.D., announced his plans to step down from his role as Superintendent to focus on family and pursue other professional endeavors.

Dr. Flores will step down effective December 1, 2020, but will remain an employee of Round Rock ISD until March 31, 2021 to assist with the transition of leadership.

“Round Rock ISD is my home and I love this District like no other. It was the honor of my career to return to Round Rock ISD in 2013 as Superintendent and lead this extraordinary school system and I am proud of the work we’ve accomplished and the ‘Destination District’ Round Rock ISD has become,” Dr. Flores said. “I am ready to transition to the next chapter in my career, one that allows me to continue to advocate for Texas public schools, pursue my lifelong goal of writing a book about the transformational power of public education, and also have time for family and friends. I believe the time is right for new leadership and a new perspective in Round Rock ISD that will build on our legacy of excellence.”

Speaking on behalf of the Board of Trustees, Board President Amy Weir praised the Superintendent for his dedication to the students and staff of Round Rock ISD.

“On behalf of the Board, we thank Superintendent Steve Flores for his seven plus years of leadership. During the last few months Dr. Flores has worked tirelessly for Round Rock ISD as the District moved to online learning in the midst of this global pandemic,” President Weir said. “Along with the Board, Dr. Flores has continued to focus Round Rock ISD and its stakeholders on the goal for all of our students to achieve success beyond high school graduation.”

District Highlights Under Dr. Flores’s Leadership

  • Successful Bond Programs passed in 2014 and 2018 totaling more than $800 million.
  • Opened several new campuses and facilities, including Joe Lee Johnson Elementary, Pearson Ranch Middle School, Early College High School, Success High School, and Performing Arts Centers at Cedar Ridge and Stony Point high schools.
  • Established first-ever Office of Equity in Round Rock ISD and hired the District’s inaugural Chief Equity Officer.
  • Established Round Rock ISD Police Department with a groundbreaking model focusing on student advocacy and behavioral health.
  • Round Rock ISD college readiness rates recognized as best in Central Texas by Austin Chamber multiple years.
  • Seven consecutive Superior ratings on the Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas.
  • Only District in Texas to earn and maintain a AAA rating from both Moody’s and Fitch.
  • Selected in 2017 as one of seven districts across the state to participate in the inaugural cohort of the Holdsworth Center leadership program. Founded by H-E-B CEO Charles Butt, the program is a five-year partnership focused on helping public school districts grow their pipeline of inspiring leaders.

About Dr. Steve Flores

Dr. Flores. has been the Superintendent of Schools in Round Rock Independent School District since October 1, 2013. Prior to this appointment, Dr. Flores served as Superintendent of Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District, Chief of Staff and Chief Administrative Officer for Dallas Independent School District, and Area Superintendent in Round Rock ISD and Pflugerville ISD. His extensive experience includes periods as a school principal, assistant principal and classroom teacher. He began his career in public education at the age of 18 as paraprofessional and assistant coach.

In 2020, Dr. Flores was named the Texas PTA Superintendent of the Year and in 2019 was selected by the Austin Chamber as the Central Texas Superintendent of the Year for Round Rock ISD’s impressive success in college readiness rates. Among his many honors, Dr. Flores twice was awarded the Region 15 Principal of the Year award, received the Meritorious Leadership Commendation in 2007 from The University of Texas at Austin’s Cooperative Superintendency Program, and was the 2001 Recipient of the Richard Miller Scholarship Award from the American Association of School Administrators.

A Texas native, Dr. Flores grew up in San Angelo, Texas. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education from Angelo State University, his Superintendent’s Certificate from Texas Tech University, and a Ph.D. in Educational Administration from the University of Texas at Austin.

Dear Round Rock ISD Community,

Serving as the Superintendent of Schools for Round Rock Independent School District has been the honor of my lifetime. I first came to Round Rock ISD in 2004 as an Area Superintendent and was fortunate to return in 2013 to lead this extraordinary District as Superintendent.

Round Rock ISD has long been lauded for its stellar reputation, and in the last decade we have truly become a “Destination District” known across the state and even nationally for exceptional student performance, innovative teaching, engaging extracurricular activities, and award-winning fine arts and athletic programs. From our teachers and campus administrators, to our business professionals and dedicated support staff who are the backbone of this massive organization, the people of Round Rock ISD are committed to students, our community and the mission of public education. It has been a breathtaking thing to witness over the past seven years and has made me proud every day to come to work and do my part.

That is just one of many reasons the decision I am sharing with you now has been so difficult to reach. On December 1, I will step down as Superintendent. I will remain available to assist the District with a transition of leadership until March 31, 2021, but at that point will officially resign from Round Rock ISD.

I am ready to transition to the next chapter in my career, one that allows me to continue to advocate for Texas public schools, pursue my lifelong goal of writing a book about the transformational power of public education, and also have time for family and friends. I believe the time is right for new leadership and a new perspective in Round Rock ISD that will build on our legacy of excellence.

I can not express how much I will miss being a part of this extraordinary team. Please know that Round Rock is my home, it is my heart, and I will always support and advocate for Round Rock ISD schools. I am so proud of what we have accomplished together and what Round Rock ISD will continue to achieve. Thank you for allowing me to serve you and our District for the past seven years.

Acerca del Dr. Steve Flores

Dr. Flores ha sido el Superintendente de Escuelas en el Distrito Escolar Independiente de Round Rock desde el 1 de octubre del 2013. Antes de este nombramiento, el Dr. Flores se desempeñó como Superintendente del Distrito Escolar Independiente Consolidado de Harlingen, Jefe de Personal y Director Administrativo del Distrito Escolar Independiente de Dallas, y Superintendente de Área en Round Rock ISD y Pflugerville ISD. Su amplia experiencia incluye períodos como director de escuela, subdirector y maestro de clase.
