Superintendent Steve Flores, Ph.D. announced today the selection of veteran equity and diversity expert DeWayne Street as Round Rock ISD’s first-ever Chief Equity Officer.
The newly created position is aimed at improving equity and inclusion efforts Districtwide and will oversee work in creating an equitable, diverse and inclusive working and learning environment for every member of the Round Rock ISD community.
For the past 20 years, Street has owned DeWayne Street Consulting Midway Diversity Solutions and served as a Diversity Consultant where he has helped organizations build capacity to create inclusive and culturally competent environments and design and implement strategic diversity plans. While working as a consultant he also served EQUUS Workforce Solutions as their Regional Director for Workforce Services, where he took on a role as an internal diversity, equity and inclusion consultant. He also has held the role of Vice President of Organizational Development at Goodwill Industries of Central Texas, Deputy Administrator of Employment and Training for the State of Wisconsin and, early in his career, taught U.S. History, African-American History and Government at the secondary level. He has a total of 17 years of experience as an educator.
“Frederick Douglass once said, ‘Right is of no sex and truth is of no color,’” Street said. “These words have guided my practice in the space of equity and inclusion for over 20 years, and they are just as salient today as they were back in 1847 when they were first published. The goal of equity and inclusion is to create space for everyone to be heard even if they are not agreed with, and this cannot be achieved if certain voices are muted or marginalized. I’m excited and honored to work with this community to move these equity efforts forward and collaborate with staff and students at all levels to create an inclusive culture and environment.”
Street earned his Master’s Degree in Adult Continuing Education from Northern Illinois University and a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science and Education from Alabama State University. He has also studied human resource development and diversity issues abroad, including in Taiwan, South Korea, China and Brazil.
“Mr. Street is a strong advocate for and experienced leader in diversity and inclusivity efforts for organizations at all levels,” Dr. Flores said. “His work as a diversity, equity and inclusivity consultant has benefited many organizations across the state and we are excited to bring him on board as a member of the Round Rock ISD family to enhance our equity efforts and help us create a learning and working environment where all feel safe, heard, represented and included.”
