For the second consecutive year, Berkman Principal Kathy Cawthron has been recognized as one of the top administrators in the state as she was named a finalist for the H-E-B Excellence in Education Principal Award.
To notify her of the achievement, Cawthron was surprised by a group of H-E-B representatives and District administrators at her home with news of the honor. Along with the accomplishment, H-E-B awarded Cawthron with a $2,500 grant for her campus and a $1,000 personal prize.
“Kathy Cawthron’s mission is to help every child succeed no matter what, and you see that mindset drive her work as an administrator each day,” said Superintendent Steve Flores, Ph.D. “Her leadership and collaboration with staff, students and parents continue to transform the Berkman Arts Integration Academy culture and further establish the campus as a point of pride for our District, region and state.”
The H-E-B Excellence in Education Principal Award honors exceptional leaders who have made a positive impact on campus culture and built strong community relationships. If selected as the statewide winner, Cawthron will receive a $25,000 grant for Berkman and a $10,000 personal prize.
“I am humbled to be named a finalist in the H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards for the second year in a row,” Cawthron said. “This award honors all of my staff and students, who work so intentionally and with their whole hearts to make Berkman Arts Integration Academy a successful community of learners and a family where we embrace diversity and meet the needs of all students through exploration, engagement, and empowerment. Our focus at Berkman is always doing what’s best for kids, and at this time of crisis schooling more than ever, we strive to provide equitable access to learning for our diverse population. I am so proud to be the principal of the amazing Claude Berkman Elementary Arts Integration Academy! We appreciate H-E-B for honoring our dedicated efforts once again.”
Cawthron has been the principal of Berkman since 2015 and has 23 years of experience as a school administrator.
