Texas Art Education Association (TAEA) has named Berkman Elementary Arts Integration Academy Principal, Kathy Cawthron 2018 School Principal of the Year.

Each year, TAEA awards one non-TAEA member school administrator in the state of Texas with this award. Cawthron’s designation has distinguished her as a principal who has demonstrated unusual support for art education and the visual arts.

Cawthron’s leadership has afforded her campus community the opportunity to cross-subject collaborate, integrating visual and performing arts into dual language instruction, math, language arts, social studies and science resulting in a robust student classroom experience.

“Kathy has not only supported but also strengthened the general music and visual arts programs, while adding theatre, dance, and strings to the fine arts offerings,” said Lisa Roebuck, director of fine arts. “Her work with campus and District staff to develop an engaging and sustainable after-school arts enrichment program has built a positive campus culture for the entire community.”

Cawthron will receive her award Friday, Nov. 9, 2018 at TAEA’s 58th Annual Conference in McAllen.

Berkman Elementary School is a Title I campus and serves 473 students, Pre-K through grade 5. TAEA is the largest state professional art education association in the nation.
