Members of the PTA at Spicewood Elementary School and first-grade students at Sommer Elementary School hosted food drives to gather donations for the Joe Lee Johnson STEAM Academy food pantry. A local software company, Finance Genius, also made a contribution to the food pantry that serves about 55 students on a weekly basis while school is in session.
“Donations of items for our food pantry from the community and fellow District schools demonstrates how we come together as one family when students are in need,” Joe Lee Johnson Principal Gabi Nino said. “The food pantry has created some relief for some students identified with the most critical need. With school enrollment increasing for the 2017-2018 year the number of students who could benefit from the food pantry is expected to double.”
What began as a realization about hunger in the community developed into a solution when first-grade students at Joe Lee Johnson created a campus food pantry aimed to serve fellow students as a reality-based learning project.
“We have more students who qualify to participate in the weekly food pantry program, and when we can secure a consistent sponsor, we will be able to expand food pantry benefits to those students as well,” Nino said.
