Cactus Ranch Elementary School fifth-grade students Monica Zhang and Tanishka Gupta collaboratively won first place in the state for the Texas Poison Center Network Poison Prevention Poster Contest.
Students from third to fifth-grade learned about poison prevention in February and were invited to create posters to share what they learned. Monica and Tanishka won first place for the Central Texas region and then were chosen as the first place winner for the state.
“I couldn’t be more proud of Monica and Tanishka on winning first place both regionally and in the state,” said Pam Wallace, registered nurse at Cactus Ranch. “Not only did they do a great job with their poster but they helped further awareness around poison prevention safety.”
This was the first year two students submitted one poster for the competition. Although Texas Poison Center only had one prize for the first place winner, a Kindle Fire, Monica and Tanishka agreed to share their prize with one another.
Third-grade student Akshainie Kamma won third place and her sister, fifth grade student Avighna Kamma won the Most Unique poster in the Central Texas region. They were awarded a drone and a board game, respectively. All winners will be presented with awards and prizes during the State Emergency Services commissioners meeting at the state building in Austin on May 25.
